1. National Doctors’ Day Observed Across India – 1 July 2026

National Doctors’ Day was observed across India on 1 July 2026 to recognise the dedication, service and contribution of doctors and other medical professionals to public health and society. The day commemorates the birth and death anniversary of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, an eminent physician, educationist and former Chief Minister of West Bengal. Dr B. C. Roy was born on 1 July 1882 and passed away on 1 July 1962. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1961 for his contribution to medicine and public service. 2. Goods and Services Tax Day Marked in India – 1 July 2026

5. MoSPI Released Sustainable Development Goal Publications – 1 July 2026

27. Harshvardhan GB Became India’s 97th Chess Grandmaster

Chennai-based chess player Harshvardhan GB became India’s 97th Grandmaster after fulfilling the necessary performance and rating requirements. He achieved the required norm during the Chola Grandmaster Chess Tournament.

The Grandmaster title is awarded by the International Chess Federation, known as FIDE. It is the highest regular title awarded by FIDE and is generally retained for life. To become a Grandmaster, a player must achieve the required international norms and attain the prescribed rating.

He worked as a Tamil teacher and was associated with the Vaanampaadi literary movement, which promoted modern and free-verse poetry.

Puviyarasu authored more than 120 books, including poetry collections and translations. He translated the works of several well-known international and Indian writers into Tamil, making world literature accessible to Tamil readers.

He received the Sahitya Akademi Award twice. He was honoured in 2007 for his Tamil translation “Puratchikaran” and again in 2010 for “Kaiyoppam.”

30. Ministry of Cooperation Marked Its Fifth Foundation Day and Launched New Initiatives

31. Global Passport Index 2026 Ranked Sweden First and India 125th

Global Citizen Solutions released the fifth edition of the Global Passport Index 2026. Sweden was ranked as the country with the strongest passport, followed by Switzerland, Finland, Germany and the Netherlands.

India was placed at the 125th position among 197 countries with a composite score of 45.1. The index evaluates passports using three broad components: enhanced mobility, investment opportunities and quality of life.

India was ranked 136th under the enhanced-mobility component, 118th in quality of life and 94th in the investment category.

32. Global Biofuel Alliance Selected Fifteen Fellows under Its Flagship Fellowship Programme

The India-led Global Biofuel Alliance selected 15 early-career researchers for the Global Biofuel Champion Fellowship programme. The selected researchers will work as Global Biofuel Alliance ambassadors for two years and contribute to sustainable bioenergy research and international clean-energy cooperation.

Each selected fellow will receive a research grant of USD 15,000, along with mentorship and opportunities for global engagement. The Indian researchers selected for the programme were Ruchi Agrawal from The Energy and Resources Institute and Abhishek Sahoo from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.

33. Nepal’s Jestha Varna Mahavihar Received UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Recognition

The seventeenth-century Jestha Varna Mahavihar Buddhist monastery in Lalitpur, Nepal, received the 2025 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award of Merit for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

The monastery was restored after suffering damage during the 2015 Gorkha earthquake. Its conservation combined modern earthquake-resistant techniques with the preservation of traditional Newari architecture, woodcarvings and Buddhist cultural practices.

The restoration was supported by the Government of India through post-earthquake cultural-heritage reconstruction assistance worth NPR 13.78 crore. The monastery is also known as Jyaba Bahi or Chakrabahil and is located near Patan Durbar Square.

34. New Chiefs Appointed to BPR&D, NCRB and SVPNPA

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved new leadership appointments for three important police and law-enforcement institutions.

Alok Kumar Mittal was appointed Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development. Amit Garg was appointed Director of the National Crime Records Bureau, while Sujeet Pandey was appointed Director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy.

35. Dilip Asbe Appointed to SWIFT’s Global Supervisory Board

Dilip Asbe, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Payments Corporation of India, was appointed to the Supervisory Board of the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication.

The appointment came as SWIFT moved from a single-tier board structure to a two-tier governance model consisting of a Supervisory Board and a Management Board. The Supervisory Board will provide strategic oversight and ensure balanced representation in SWIFT’s governance.

The appointment strengthens India’s presence in global financial messaging and international payment-system governance.

36. Centre for Civilizational Studies ‘Manas and Mahabharata’ Established in Kyrgyzstan

The Centre for Studies of International Relations and the Manas National Academy established the International Centre for Civilizational Studies titled “Manas and Mahabharata” in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

The centre will promote comparative research on the Indian epic Mahabharata and the Kyrgyz epic Manas. It will also support scientific, educational and cultural cooperation, researcher training and humanitarian diplomacy.

The first Hindi translation of the Kyrgyz epic Manas, translated by Hem Chandra Pande and Ramakant Dwivedi, was released during the inauguration. A cooperation agreement was also signed with seven Kyrgyz universities.

37. Prime Minister Narendra Modi Received Indonesia’s Highest Civilian Honour

During his visit to Indonesia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the “Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia,” also described as Indonesia’s highest civilian honour.

The recognition was presented for his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations between India and Indonesia. During the visit, he became the first Indian Prime Minister to address Indonesia’s Parliament and introduced the “Ganga–Mahakam Vision” for long-term strategic cooperation.

India and Indonesia announced 20 outcomes, including agreements and initiatives covering defence, space, healthcare, agriculture, critical minerals, technology and cultural cooperation. The Prime Minister also visited the UNESCO-listed Prambanan Temple and inaugurated a restoration project proposed to be led by the Archaeological Survey of India.

38. Leander Paes Appointed Asian Tennis Federation Player Ambassador

Former Indian tennis player Leander Paes was appointed Player Ambassador of the Asian Tennis Federation. In this role, he will promote grassroots tennis, encourage youth participation and support the development of the sport across Asia.

Leander Paes won a bronze medal in men’s singles at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. He also won 18 Grand Slam titles and completed a career Grand Slam in both men’s doubles and mixed doubles.

He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2024 and has received major Indian honours, including the Arjuna Award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.

39. Aswath S Became India’s 98th Chess Grandmaster

Seventeen-year-old Aswath S from Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, became India’s 98th Chess Grandmaster after earning his third and final Grandmaster norm at the Pune International Grandmaster Round Robin Tournament.

He secured the final norm by finishing runner-up with seven points from nine rounds. His earlier Grandmaster norms were achieved at tournaments in Germany and Hungary.

The achievement further strengthened India’s growing position in international chess and highlighted the emergence of young players from different parts of the country.

40. India’s First Centre for High-Altitude Medicine Planned in Himachal Pradesh

The foundation stone was laid for the Indian Council of Medical Research Centre for High-Altitude Medicine and Public Health Research at Keylong in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh.

The centre will be India’s first dedicated institution for research on high-altitude medicine and public health. Its focus areas will include mountain physiology, climate-sensitive diseases, tribal health, maternal and child health, mental health, nutrition, disaster medicine and occupational health.

The institution will use telemedicine, drones and real-time health surveillance to improve medical services in remote mountain areas. It will collaborate with the Armed Forces Medical Services, Defence Research and Development Organisation, the Himachal Pradesh Government and academic institutions.

41. Centre of Excellence on Human–Wildlife Conflict Inaugurated in Coimbatore

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change inaugurated a Centre of Excellence on Human–Wildlife Conflict at the Wildlife Institute of India–Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

The centre will serve as a national hub for research, policy support, innovation, training and the sharing of best practices to reduce human–wildlife conflict. A National Human–Wildlife Conflict Portal was also launched to support data management, knowledge sharing and decision-making.

The first publication in a series titled “Current Status of Human–Wildlife Conflict in India: An Overview” was released during the programme.

42. Global Liveability Index 2026 Ranked Copenhagen First and Delhi 120th

The Economist Intelligence Unit released the Global Liveability Index 2026, evaluating living conditions in 173 cities.

Copenhagen retained the top position for the second consecutive year, followed by Vienna and Melbourne. Delhi was ranked 120th and was the highest-ranked Indian city included in the index.

The index assesses cities using factors such as stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. Damascus was ranked as the least liveable city, followed by Tripoli and Dhaka.

The report identified India as the fastest-growing major economy in intangible investment. India’s intangible investment reached USD 78.2 billion in 2023 after recording annual growth of 7.9%.

Intangible assets include software, databases, research and development, intellectual property, brands, design and organisational capital. Software and databases accounted for the largest share of India’s intangible investment.

48. Australia Announced the Return of Three Indian Antiquities

The objects included an eleventh–twelfth century granite Nandi sculpture, an eleventh-century bronze trident bearing the image of Goddess Bhadrakali and a twelfth-century basalt sculpture of the six-headed Skanda or Karttikeya.

The theme for World Youth Skills Day 2026 was “Skills for a Shared Future.” The theme emphasised the need to prepare young people for rapid technological, environmental and economic changes through digital literacy, Artificial Intelligence skills, green skills, vocational education, creativity and critical thinking.

The observance called for stronger cooperation among governments, educational institutions, employers and training organisations to ensure that young people from all social and economic backgrounds have access to quality skill-development opportunities.

51. CPWD Celebrated Its 172nd Annual Day and Introduced the SANKALP Framework

The Central Public Works Department celebrated its 172nd Annual Day at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. During the programme, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal unveiled the SANKALP framework.

CPWD is a major engineering and construction organisation under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. It undertakes the planning, construction and maintenance of central government buildings, public infrastructure and major national projects.

52. Second Edition of the Digital Threat Report 2025–26 Released

The report was jointly prepared by MeitY, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, the Computer Security Incident Response Team–Finance and SISA Information Security. It examined cybersecurity risks faced by financial institutions and payment platforms.

53. India Recorded Its Best-Ever Performance at the International Physics Olympiad

The gold medallists were Kanishk Jain from Pune, Riddhesh Anant Bendale from Indore, Rishit Garg from New Delhi, Shresth Suraiya from Mumbai and Svarit Joshi from Ahmedabad.

A Geographical Indication tag identifies products whose characteristics, quality or reputation are linked to a specific geographical location.

55. Three Indian-Origin Experts Selected to Lead US Federal Reserve Review Task Forces

The United States Federal Reserve appointed three Indian-origin experts—Raghuram Rajan, Raj Chetty and Asha Sharma—to lead three task forces reviewing different parts of the Federal Reserve’s monetary-policy framework.

Former Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan was selected to lead the Balance Sheet Policy Task Force. Harvard University economist Raj Chetty was appointed to lead the Data Task Force, while Asha Sharma was selected to lead the Productivity and Jobs Task Force.

The Index of Services Production is significant because services contribute more than half of India’s Gross Value Added. The new indicator is expected to improve high-frequency assessment of activity in important service-sector segments and support economic analysis and policymaking.

Union Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal launched the electronic Vidhi Sahitya Prakashan portal in New Delhi.

The e-VSP portal provides online access to legal books, journals, educational material and reference publications issued by Vidhi Sahitya Prakashan. It is intended to support law students, teachers, advocates, judges, researchers and other legal professionals.

The platform was developed in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre and the Official Languages Wing. Vidhi Sahitya Prakashan is part of the Legislative Department of the Ministry of Law and Justice and promotes the availability of legal literature, particularly in Hindi.

58. Saushrutam 2026 International Seminar on Ayurvedic Surgery Held in New Delhi

President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated Saushrutam 2026, a three-day international seminar on Ayurvedic surgery, at the All India Institute of Ayurveda in New Delhi.

The seminar was held from 15–17 July on the occasion of Sushruta Jayanti. Sushruta is traditionally regarded as the Father of Surgery. Specialists from India and other countries discussed Shalya Tantra, Kshara Sutra, Agnikarma, integrative oncology and developments in Ayurvedic surgical practices.

During the event, the President inaugurated an Artificial Intelligence-enabled 3 Tesla high-field Magnetic Resonance Imaging facility. A study on the professional careers of women Ayurveda graduates was also released.

59. India’s First AI-Integrated Vertical University Campus Inaugurated in Chennai

An Artificial Intelligence-integrated vertical university campus of VELS Institute of Science, Technology and Advanced Studies was inaugurated in Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai.

The campus was inaugurated by Zoho co-founder and Chief Scientist Sridhar Vembu. It includes industry–academia Centres of Excellence developed with organisations such as Intel Unnati, TCS iON, Microsoft and Oracle Academy.

The centres are intended to provide students with practical exposure to Artificial Intelligence, cloud computing and emerging technologies. VISTAS also signed an agreement to establish a flying school in the United Arab Emirates and promote cooperation in aviation education, pilot training, research and student exchange.

60. Day of International Criminal Justice Observed – 17 July 2026

The Day of International Criminal Justice, also known as International Justice Day, was observed on 17 July.

The observance commemorates the adoption of the Rome Statute on 17 July 1998. The Rome Statute is the founding treaty of the International Criminal Court, which deals with genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression.

61. Moozhikkal Pankajakshi, Nokkuvidya Puppetry Exponent, Passed Away

Renowned traditional artist Moozhikkal Pankajakshi passed away in Kerala at the age of 90. She was a prominent exponent of Nokkuvidya Pavakkali, a traditional form of puppetry in which puppets are balanced and manipulated using a thin support held between the upper lip and nose.

She dedicated much of her life to preserving and promoting the rare folk-art tradition. Her contribution helped bring wider attention to Nokkuvidya and Kerala’s traditional performing arts.

The Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri in 2020 for her contribution to the arts.

The 2026 theme was “It Is Still in Our Hands to Combat Poverty and Inequity.” The theme called upon individuals, communities and governments to take practical action against poverty, exclusion and social inequality.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the day in 2009, and it was first officially observed in 2010. Nelson Mandela received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his role in ending apartheid and supporting a peaceful democratic transition in South Africa.

63. Investment Friendliness Index 2026 Ranked Gujarat First

NITI Aayog released the Investment Friendliness Index 2026, which assessed the ability of Indian states and Union Territories to attract, facilitate and sustain investment.

Gujarat secured the first position among large states and in the overall ranking, followed by Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Goa and Odisha were also placed among the five leading performers.

The index evaluated areas such as regulatory systems, infrastructure, investor facilitation, policy stability and the overall business environment. According to the report, the five leading states accounted for a major share of India’s Foreign Direct Investment inflows.

The update added 44 new indicators, increasing the dashboard’s coverage to 165 indicators. It monitors performance across infrastructure sectors such as aviation, telecommunications, roads, railways and power.

The dashboard is designed to support evidence-based monitoring, identify sectoral trends and improve the assessment of major infrastructure developments across India.

65. White Rabbit Technology-Based Indian Standard Time Network Launched

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi inaugurated a White Rabbit Technology-based Indian Standard Time Distribution Demonstration Network at the Regional Reference Standards Laboratory in Bengaluru.

The project is part of the “One Nation, One Time” vision and aims to create a secure, indigenous and highly accurate national time-distribution network. It seeks to reduce dependence on foreign Global Positioning System-based time sources.

White Rabbit Technology is an Ethernet-based precision time-synchronisation system capable of providing sub-nanosecond accuracy. Accurate time distribution is important for banking, stock exchanges, telecommunications, power grids, defence, digital governance and advanced communication networks.

66. Gujarat Received Agriculture Leadership Award 2026 for Horticulture

Gujarat received the Agriculture Leadership Award 2026 for its performance in horticulture at the Agriculture Leadership Conclave held in New Delhi.

The award was presented by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to Gujarat Agriculture Minister Jitu Vaghani. The recognition highlighted improvements in irrigation, modern farming practices, horticultural productivity and government support for agricultural development.
