The Union Cabinet's revamped Khelo India Scheme was another important government-programme development highlighted during August.

On 14 August 2026, the Government of India launched a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)-based Direct Benefit Transfer system under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY).
The initiative was launched in Chandigarh and Dadra & Nagar Haveli and represents an important step towards digitising food-subsidy delivery.

With the launch, Chandigarh became the first Union Territory to undertake a full-fledged rollout of CBDC-based DBT for food subsidy.
The Digital Rupee mechanism is intended to make welfare delivery more transparent, secure and efficient.
Under the new mechanism, eligible beneficiaries can receive the food-subsidy component through Digital Rupee (e₹) wallets.
The initiative demonstrates how India's sovereign digital currency can potentially be integrated with government welfare programmes.

The Government described PMGKAY as the world's largest food-security programme while launching the CBDC-based DBT mechanism.

On 13 August 2026, the Union Agriculture Ministry approved ₹340.59 crore for Rajasthan under the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (PM-RKVY) and Krishonnati Yojana.

While reviewing agricultural programmes, the Union Agriculture Minister praised Telangana's Farmer ID and fertiliser-distribution model.
The system is intended to improve transparency and ensure more effective delivery of services to farmers.
The Government also called for greater attention to the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) system in Rajasthan.
KCC provides farmers with easier access to institutional credit for agricultural and allied activities.
On 17 August 2026, approval was handed over for 2,89,355 houses in Rajasthan under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G).
The housing package involves approximately ₹3,473 crore.

During the Bihar programme, the Government announced that the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) would be implemented in Bihar.

On 21 August 2026, the Ministry of Rural Development launched the National Campaign on Entrepreneurship-II under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM).

Union Women and Child Development Minister Annpurna Devi reviewed major components of Mission Shakti during a Consultative Committee meeting in Kolkata on 21 August 2026.
The meeting focused particularly on One Stop Centres, Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana and SANKALP: Hub for Empowerment of Women.
Mission Shakti is the Government's integrated programme for women's safety, security and empowerment.
Its framework consists primarily of the Sambal component for safety and security and the Samarthya component for empowerment.
By the August review, 1,033 One Stop Centres had been approved and 991 were functional.
These centres had assisted more than 15.20 lakh women affected by violence or facing distress.

Under PMMVY, eligible pregnant and lactating women receive ₹5,000 in two instalments for their first living child.

These included over 64.46 lakh pregnant women, 45.44 lakh lactating mothers and 15.68 lakh adolescent girls.

Government data highlighted the role of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in expanding women's ownership of housing.
Under PMAY-Gramin, more than 96.06 lakh houses were allotted solely to women as of 13 August 2026, while under PMAY-U/PMAY-U 2.0 the Government reported over 1.25 crore houses sanctioned and more than 1 crore houses completed and delivered, with a strong emphasis on women's ownership.
