The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released the Periodic Labour Force Survey Quarterly Bulletin for April–June 2026 on 10 August. The report provides important information about employment, unemployment, labour-force participation and the distribution of workers in rural and urban India.
According to the bulletin, India’s overall unemployment rate among people aged 15 years and above increased to 5.4%, compared with 5% during January–March 2026. Rural unemployment increased from 4.3% to 4.8%, while urban unemployment remained broadly stable, rising marginally from 6.6% to 6.7%. The unemployment rate among urban women declined from 9.1% to 8.7%.
The overall Labour Force Participation Rate decreased from 55.5% to 54.6%. Rural LFPR declined from 58.2% to 56.9%, whereas urban LFPR remained unchanged at 50.2%. The urban Worker Population Ratio remained stable at 46.8%. Urban male LFPR increased marginally from 75% to 75.3%.
The proportion of regular wage or salaried employees increased from 15.5% to 16.1% in rural India and from 48.9% to 49.3% in urban India. Employment in the secondary sector increased in both rural and urban areas, while tertiary-sector employment recorded an increase in rural areas. The estimates were based on information collected from 5,59,673 people—3,18,792 in rural areas and 2,40,881 in urban areas.

India was placed 176th among 177 countries in the Environmental Performance Index 2026, making it the second-lowest-ranked country in the assessment. India received an overall score of 22.46 out of 100 and finished above only Laos. Estonia topped the index with a score of 74.79.
The Environmental Performance Index assesses countries using indicators associated with environmental health, ecosystem vitality and climate-change performance. These cover subjects such as air quality, sanitation and drinking water, waste management, biodiversity, ecosystem protection, fisheries, agriculture and climate policy.
India’s low position was linked particularly to poor air quality, high pollution exposure, pressure on ecosystems and continuing dependence on fossil fuels. However, the index also recognised areas in which India has introduced significant climate-policy measures and expanded renewable-energy capacity.
The EPI is prepared by researchers associated with the Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy and the Center for International Earth Science Information Network at Columbia University.

The Real Estate Roundtable released its third-quarter 2026 Sentiment Index, which measures the confidence of senior commercial-real-estate executives in the United States. The overall index stood at 63, unchanged from the previous quarter.
The Current Conditions Index increased by two points to 63, indicating comparatively healthier operating conditions. However, the Future Conditions Index declined by one point to 63. Any score above 50 is generally considered positive under the index’s methodology.
The report found that commercial-property fundamentals and debt availability had improved. Nevertheless, the sector continued to face difficulties in raising equity capital, while transaction activity remained relatively subdued. Respondents also reported considerable differences in performance across different property types and geographical markets.

The United States Department of Agriculture released the August 2026 edition of the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates. The monthly report provides forecasts for the production, consumption, trade and stocks of major agricultural commodities in the United States and the global market.
The report covers wheat, rice, coarse grains, oilseeds and cotton. It also provides estimates concerning sugar, meat, poultry, eggs and milk in the United States, along with information about Mexico’s sugar market.
WASDE is regarded as an important international agricultural report because its forecasts influence commodity prices, food-security assessments, agricultural planning and international trade decisions. It is prepared by the World Agricultural Outlook Board under the Office of the Chief Economist of the USDA.

The United States Federal Reserve released its Consumer Credit Report on 7 August 2026. According to the report, total consumer credit increased at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 2.6% during the second quarter of 2026. In June alone, consumer credit increased at an annual rate of 3.3%.
Revolving credit, which primarily includes credit-card borrowing, grew at an annual rate of 3.9% during the quarter. Non-revolving credit, which includes vehicle loans, education loans and other fixed-payment borrowing, increased at an annual rate of 2.1%.
The Consumer Credit Report, officially identified as the G.19 statistical release, is an important indicator of household borrowing and consumer demand in the American economy. Mortgage borrowing is not included in this report.

According to the Global Footprint Network’s Country Overshoot Days assessment, Thailand reached its Country Overshoot Day on 8 August 2026, while Peru reached it on 12 August 2026.
A country’s Overshoot Day marks the date on which humanity would exhaust the biological resources that Earth can regenerate in an entire year if everyone in the world consumed resources at the same rate as the residents of that country. Thailand’s consumption pattern would require approximately 1.7 Earths if adopted globally, while Peru’s pattern would require around 1.6 Earths.
The assessment also indicated that humanity would require only about 75% of one Earth if everyone consumed resources at the average rate recorded for India. Country Overshoot Day should not be confused with Earth Overshoot Day, which represents the global ecological-resource threshold.

7. India’s retail inflation increases to 4.45% in July 2026
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released India’s Consumer Price Index data for July 2026 on 12 August. Retail inflation increased marginally to 4.45% from 4.38% in June, marking the second consecutive month in which inflation remained above the Reserve Bank of India’s medium-term target of 4%.
The increase was mainly attributed to higher food and fuel prices. Consumer Food Price Index-based food inflation rose from 5.32% in June to 5.52% in July. Elevated international crude-oil prices and domestic adjustments in petrol and diesel prices also contributed to inflationary pressure.
The July inflation rate was broadly in line with market expectations and remained within the RBI’s tolerance range of 2–6%. The figures were calculated using the revised CPI base year of 2024.

8. Fitch Ratings affirms India’s sovereign rating at BBB−
Fitch Ratings affirmed India’s Long-Term Foreign-Currency Issuer Default Rating at BBB− with a Stable Outlook on 11 August 2026. BBB− is the lowest rating within the investment-grade category.
Fitch cited India’s strong medium-term economic growth, improved policy credibility, macroeconomic stability and substantial foreign-exchange reserves as important strengths. It projected India’s real GDP growth at 6.4% for the financial year 2026–27, which would remain considerably higher than the median growth of countries with comparable credit ratings.
The agency identified India’s high public debt, comparatively low per-capita income and weaker governance indicators as major rating constraints. General government debt was estimated at approximately 84.4% of GDP. India’s foreign-exchange reserves were projected to increase to about $733 billion during FY2027.
Fitch also noted risks arising from elevated energy prices and employment-related pressures, although India’s external financial position and domestic economic growth continued to support the Stable Outlook.

9. BSE to enter Nifty 50 and replace Wipro
NSE Indices announced a periodic reconstitution of the Nifty equity indices during the week. Under the revision, BSE Limited will enter the benchmark Nifty 50 index and replace information-technology company Wipro. The change will become effective from 30 September 2026.
BSE Limited operates the Bombay Stock Exchange, one of Asia’s oldest stock exchanges. Its inclusion reflects its market capitalisation, liquidity, trading availability and compliance with the eligibility requirements prescribed for the Nifty 50.
Nifty 50 is the flagship index of the National Stock Exchange. It represents 50 major companies listed on the NSE across important sectors of the Indian economy. The index is managed by NSE Indices Limited and is widely used as a benchmark by investors, index funds and exchange-traded funds.

10. NFIB Small Business Optimism Index rises to 99.8
The United States National Federation of Independent Business released its Small Business Economic Trends report on 11 August 2026. The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index increased by 2.4 points to 99.8 in July, compared with 97.4 in June.
The July reading was the highest since August 2025 and exceeded the index’s 52-year average of 98. Eight of the index’s ten components improved during the month. Hiring intentions contributed significantly to the rise, with a seasonally adjusted net 20% of surveyed business owners planning to create jobs during the following three months. This was the strongest hiring-plan reading since October 2022.
Although concerns about inflation eased, the quality and availability of labour remained the leading problem reported by small-business owners. The index measures expectations regarding business conditions, employment, inventories, sales, earnings and expansion.

11. Realtor.com releases 2026 Hottest ZIP Codes ranking
Realtor.com released its Hottest ZIP Codes of 2026 report, ranking American residential markets according to online buyer interest and the speed at which properties were sold. ZIP code 01960 in Peabody, Massachusetts, secured the first position.
Montclair in New Jersey, with ZIP code 07042, was ranked second, while Sewell in New Jersey, ZIP code 08080, finished third. Fairport in New York ranked fourth, followed by Westfield in Massachusetts at fifth position.
The remainder of the top ten consisted of Livonia in Michigan, Lititz in Pennsylvania, North Haven in Connecticut, New Berlin in Wisconsin and Wheaton in Illinois. Peabody properties received approximately 4.1 times as many views per listing as the national average and remained on the market for a median period of about 20 days.
The report examined more than 29,000 ZIP codes. The ranking was based mainly on unique property views and the median number of days listings remained active. Only one ZIP code from each metropolitan area was allowed in the national top-ten list.

12. WHO publishes report on vaccine prioritisation for Bundibugyo virus disease
The World Health Organization published the report of the third meeting of its Technical Advisory Group on Candidate Vaccine Prioritization for the Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak response on 7 August 2026. The meeting itself was held on 31 July.
The document summarises expert deliberations and recommendations concerning candidate vaccines that could be considered during a Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak. Bundibugyo virus is one of the viruses capable of causing Ebola disease, a severe and frequently fatal illness.
The advisory group evaluates candidate vaccines using factors such as available safety information, immune response, effectiveness evidence, manufacturing capacity, supply, storage requirements and suitability for rapid deployment during an outbreak.
The report was especially important for strengthening preparedness and supporting evidence-based vaccine selection during future outbreaks.

13. World Bank updates international debt databases
The World Bank updated its Quarterly External Debt Statistics databases under both the General Data Dissemination System and the Special Data Dissemination Standard on 7 August 2026. It subsequently updated the Quarterly Public Sector Debt database on 11 August.
Quarterly External Debt Statistics provide information about the external borrowing of participating countries, including debt owed by governments, central banks, financial institutions and private entities to non-residents. The SDDS database generally contains more detailed and timely information from countries following the IMF’s higher data-dissemination standard, while the GDDS database provides coverage for a wider group of economies.
The Quarterly Public Sector Debt database presents information about the debt obligations of governments and other public-sector institutions. These datasets help economists, policymakers and investors evaluate debt sustainability, external vulnerability and fiscal risk.

14. India’s representation in QS World University Rankings rises to 52 institutions
Information presented by the Union government in Parliament during the week showed that the number of Indian institutions included in the QS World University Rankings increased from 11 in 2015 to 52 in the 2027 edition.
Twenty-six Indian institutions improved their positions in the latest rankings. The expansion was not limited to the Indian Institutes of Technology, as universities and other non-IIT institutions also strengthened their global presence.
The government associated this growth with reforms under the National Education Policy 2020, increased emphasis on research, institutional expansion, internationalisation and quality assessment. Participation in India’s National Institutional Ranking Framework has also increased since its introduction.
QS World University Rankings are issued by Quacquarelli Symonds. They assess universities using indicators concerning academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, research citations, international participation and sustainability.

15. India identified as the world’s sixth-largest economy in FY2025–26
The Union government informed Parliament that India was the world’s sixth-largest economy during FY2025–26, based on the International Monetary Fund’s April 2026 World Economic Outlook data. India’s nominal GDP was estimated at approximately $3.92 trillion.
India remained the world’s third-largest economy when GDP was measured using purchasing-power parity. The information also highlighted India’s position as one of the fastest-growing major economies despite international trade uncertainty and geopolitical risks.
Nominal GDP compares economies using current market exchange rates, while purchasing-power-parity GDP adjusts for differences in the cost of goods and services between countries. Consequently, India’s ranking differs under the two methods.
