Air India appointed Tewolde Gebremariam as its new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, succeeding Campbell Wilson. The appointment followed a global search conducted by a dedicated committee of the airline’s Board of Directors.
Gebremariam previously served as Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines. During his leadership, Ethiopian Airlines developed into Africa’s largest airline, its revenue increased more than fourfold and its aircraft fleet nearly tripled. He also guided the airline through the COVID-19 pandemic and the consequences of the Boeing 737 MAX accident of 2019.
He spent more than 36 years with Ethiopian Airlines and served as its Regional Director for India and South Asia during 1995–96. After leaving the airline in March 2022, he worked as a senior strategic adviser to Delta Air Lines.
At Air India, Gebremariam will be responsible for improving operational and safety standards, controlling financial losses, modernising the fleet and strengthening the airline’s domestic and international network. Campbell Wilson will leave the position as part of the planned leadership transition.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved a one-year extension in the service of T.V. Somanathan as Cabinet Secretary beyond 30 August 2026. The extension will allow him to remain India’s senior-most civil servant until August 2027.
Somanathan is a 1987-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre. He became Cabinet Secretary on 30 August 2024 after succeeding Rajiv Gauba.
Before his appointment as Cabinet Secretary, Somanathan served as Finance Secretary and Expenditure Secretary. He has also held senior positions in the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and the Tamil Nadu government. He previously worked at the World Bank and served as Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Corporation.
The Cabinet Secretary serves as the administrative head of the Cabinet Secretariat, chairs the Civil Services Board and coordinates policy implementation among different ministries and departments.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet also granted Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan a one-year extension in service beyond 22 August 2026. He will continue in the position until 22 August 2027.
Govind Mohan is a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Sikkim cadre. He became Union Home Secretary in August 2024, succeeding Ajay Kumar Bhalla. Before assuming the position, he served as Union Culture Secretary.
As Home Secretary, he is responsible for assisting the Ministry of Home Affairs in matters concerning internal security, border management, Centre-state relations, disaster management, police administration and Union Territories.
The extension was granted by relaxing the relevant retirement provisions under the Fundamental Rules and the All India Services Death-cum-Retirement Benefits Rules, 1958.

The Reserve Bank of India appointed Monisha Chakraborty as an Executive Director with effect from 3 August 2026. The appointment became an important current-affairs development during the week beginning 6 August.
As Executive Director, Chakraborty will oversee the RBI’s Foreign Exchange Department and Financial Markets Regulation Department. These departments are involved in implementing foreign-exchange regulations and supervising regulatory policies governing India’s financial markets.
Before her promotion, Chakraborty served as Chief General Manager-in-Charge in the RBI’s Department of Supervision. She has more than three decades of experience at the central bank and has worked in the areas of banking supervision, foreign exchange, government and bank accounts and customer protection. She has also served as a Banking Ombudsman.
She holds postgraduate qualifications in economics and business economics and is a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers.

The Union government appointed Deepti Gaur Mukerjee as Secretary of the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education. The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet through a modification of an earlier personnel order.
Mukerjee is a 1993-batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre. She was serving as Secretary in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs before receiving the new assignment. She has also served as Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Authority and held several administrative positions in Madhya Pradesh.
She succeeds Vineet Joshi, who was moved to the Ministry of Panchayati Raj. An earlier order appointing Naresh Pal Gangwar as Higher Education Secretary was modified before he assumed the position.
As Higher Education Secretary, Mukerjee will oversee policy and administration relating to universities, colleges, technical institutions, scholarships, academic reforms, research and implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 in higher-education institutions.

Following the appointment of Deepti Gaur Mukerjee as Higher Education Secretary, Pallavi Jain Govil was appointed Secretary in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. She had been serving as Secretary of the Department of Youth Affairs.
Sunil Paliwal was appointed Secretary of the Department of Youth Affairs, replacing Pallavi Jain Govil. Paliwal had been serving as Chairman of the Inland Waterways Authority of India.
Sushil Kumar Lohani was appointed Chairman of the Inland Waterways Authority of India in place of Sunil Paliwal. Lohani was serving as an Officer on Special Duty in the Cabinet Secretariat.
These changes were part of a senior-level administrative reshuffle approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

Sudhir Sitapati resigned as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Godrej Consumer Products Limited shortly after shareholders had approved his reappointment. His departure was described as an unexpected leadership change.
Sitapati had served as GCPL’s MD and CEO since October 2021. During his tenure, the company simplified its product portfolio, increased manufacturing capacity and pursued expansion in domestic and overseas consumer markets.
Following his resignation, the company appointed Aasif Malbari as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for a five-year term. Malbari had been serving as Global Chief Financial Officer of GCPL since 2023 and had also worked as President of Godrej Africa, USA and the Middle East.
Malbari has more than three decades of experience in finance and consumer businesses, including earlier roles at Hindustan Unilever and Tata Motors. Vishal Kedia was assigned responsibility as interim Chief Financial Officer following Malbari’s elevation.

N. Chandrasekaran informed the Tata Sons Board that he would not seek another term as Chairman. He will continue in the position until the conclusion of his existing term in February 2027, allowing the group time to conduct a succession process.
Chandrasekaran became Chairman of Tata Sons in 2017 and was the first person from outside the Parsi community to lead the holding company of the Tata Group. Before that, he served as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tata Consultancy Services.
During his leadership, the Tata Group expanded its presence in aviation, electronics, digital services, electric vehicles and semiconductor manufacturing. The group also reacquired Air India and merged it with Vistara. His tenure nevertheless faced challenges involving Air India’s losses, Jaguar Land Rover’s performance and differences concerning the future structure and possible listing of Tata Sons.
Tata Sons is the principal holding company of the Tata Group, while Tata Trusts holds a controlling stake of approximately 66%. No successor was announced immediately.

Vikas Khemani was elected Chairman of the Association of Portfolio Managers in India at its 29th Board meeting held on 10 August 2026. Sandeep Jethwani was elected Vice-Chairman.
Khemani is the founder of Carnelian Asset Management and has extensive experience in capital markets, equity research and investment management. Jethwani is associated with Dezerv, a wealth-management and investment platform.
The Association of Portfolio Managers in India represents organisations operating in India’s Portfolio Management Services sector. It works with regulators and market participants to promote professional standards, investor awareness, research and the development of the portfolio-management industry.

10. ACC approves senior officials’ appointments to international organisations
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved ten appointments and one tenure extension involving Indian officials at major international organisations and overseas missions. The postings covered the Asian Development Bank, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, World Trade Organization, International Civil Aviation Organization and SAARC Secretariat.
Baldeo Purushartha, a 2002-batch IAS officer of the Punjab cadre, was appointed Senior Adviser to the Executive Director at the Asian Development Bank in Manila for three years. He will succeed Ponnuraj V.
Rahul Jain, a 2005-batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, was appointed Senior Adviser to the Executive Director for India at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C. He will serve for three years and succeed Anand Singh.
Kapil Patidar, an Indian Economic Service officer of the 2011 batch, was appointed Adviser to the Executive Director for India at the IMF in Washington, D.C., for three years.
Hemang Jani received a two-year extension as Senior Adviser to the Executive Director at the World Bank in Washington, D.C. His tenure was extended beyond 16 July 2027 to 16 July 2029 or until his successor assumes charge, whichever occurs earlier.

11. Satyajit Mohanty appointed India’s representative to ICAO Council
Satyajit Mohanty was appointed Representative of India on the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization in Montreal, Canada. He will succeed Angshumali Rastogi after the completion of the latter’s tenure in September 2026.
Mohanty is a 1999-batch Indian Revenue Service officer from the Customs and Indirect Taxes branch. At the time of his appointment, he was serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence.
ICAO is a specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for establishing standards and recommended practices for international civil aviation. Its headquarters is situated in Montreal, Canada. India is one of the states elected to the ICAO Council.

12. Indian officials appointed to WTO, SAARC and overseas missions
Aditya Rajendra Bhojgadhiya, a 2013-batch Indian Audit and Accounts Service officer, was appointed First Secretary at India’s Permanent Mission to the World Trade Organization in Geneva. He was serving as Joint Director at the National Testing Agency and will succeed Ashish Chandolkar.
Jivisha Joshi Gangopadhyay, a 2013-batch Indian Railway Traffic Service officer, was appointed First Secretary for Legal Affairs at India’s Permanent Mission to the WTO in Geneva. She will succeed Nidhi Srivastava.
Subhash Kumar, an Indian Defence Accounts Service officer of the 2011 batch, was appointed Director at the SAARC Secretariat in Kathmandu. He will succeed Bhavesh R. Trivedi.
Gopalakrishnan Ganesan, a 2009-batch Indian Railway Accounts Service officer, was appointed Counsellor for Economic Affairs in the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C. He will succeed Vivek Chaudhary.
Brij Mohan Mishra was appointed Minister for Economic and Commercial Affairs at the Embassy of India in Tokyo, while Balamurugan D. was appointed Minister for Agriculture at the Embassy of India in Rome.

13. Francis deSouza assumes charge as CEO of Scale AI
Francis deSouza assumed office as Chief Executive Officer of Scale AI on 10 August 2026. He succeeded Jason Droege, who had been serving as interim CEO since June 2025 and will assist with the leadership transition.
DeSouza previously served as President and Chief Operating Officer for Security Products at Google Cloud. Before joining Google, he was President and CEO of Illumina, where he managed a major genomic-data platform and expanded the company’s international operations.
Earlier in his career, he served as President of Products and Services at Symantec and founded companies that were subsequently acquired by Microsoft and Symantec. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Scale AI provides data infrastructure, model evaluation and artificial-intelligence applications to technology companies, enterprises and government organisations. Alexandr Wang remains the company’s founder and Chairman.

14. Wesley Batista Filho appointed Global CEO of JBS
JBS appointed Wesley Batista Filho as its next Global Chief Executive Officer, effective January 2027. He will succeed Gilberto Tomazoni as part of a planned leadership transition.
Batista Filho joined JBS as a trainee in 2011 and subsequently managed operations in Uruguay, Paraguay, Canada, Brazil and the United States. He served as CEO of JBS Brazil, President of Seara and Global President of Operations before becoming CEO of JBS USA in 2023.
Gilberto Tomazoni will step down after serving for approximately eight years as Global CEO. Following the transition, he will become Vice-Chairman of the JBS Board and a Senior Adviser. He will also continue as Chairman of Pilgrim’s Pride.
JBS is an international food company producing beef, poultry, pork, fish and plant-based protein products. It operates in more than 20 countries and sells products in approximately 180 markets.

15. Lars Thaaning Pedersen appointed CEO of Copenhagen Offshore Partners
Copenhagen Offshore Partners appointed co-founder Lars Thaaning Pedersen as its Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 September 2026. He will return to the company’s top executive position as part of a planned leadership transition.
Henrik Scheinemann will step down as CEO and become Chairman of the Board. Pedersen has more than 20 years of experience in offshore-wind and large energy-infrastructure projects.
Between 2017 and 2023, Pedersen led COP’s operations in the United States. He helped develop Vineyard Wind, described as the first commercial-scale offshore-wind project in the United States, and supervised an offshore-wind portfolio of approximately six gigawatts across the Americas.
Copenhagen Offshore Partners develops and operates offshore-wind projects across the Asia-Pacific region, Europe and the Americas. Its international project portfolio exceeds 50 gigawatts.

16. Agnieszka Rakhmatullaev appointed President and CEO of Grand Rapids Symphony
The Grand Rapids Symphony in Michigan, United States, appointed Agnieszka Rakhmatullaev as its next President and Chief Executive Officer. She will assume charge on 14 September 2026 during the organisation’s 2026–27 season.
Rakhmatullaev has experience in arts administration, organisational leadership and orchestral management. As President and CEO, she will oversee administration, strategic planning, fundraising, community relations and the orchestra’s institutional development.
The Grand Rapids Symphony is an American professional orchestra established in 1930. Its activities include orchestral performances, educational programmes and community engagement initiatives.

17. Geoffrey Sauer appointed CEO and President of Messe Düsseldorf North America
Geoffrey Sauer was appointed Chief Executive Officer and President of Messe Düsseldorf North America. The appointment was announced on 10 August 2026.
Messe Düsseldorf North America is the United States subsidiary of Messe Düsseldorf, a major international trade-fair organiser headquartered in Germany. The organisation promotes and manages participation in industrial, healthcare, packaging, plastics, printing and technology exhibitions.
Sauer will be responsible for expanding the organisation’s North American operations, strengthening relationships with exhibitors and industry associations and increasing participation in international trade exhibitions.
