Indian Internet pioneers Suchit Nanda and Neeraj Sonker received the inaugural Internet Enablers Awards during the 44th South Asian Network Operators Group conference (SANOG 44) in Kathmandu, Nepal. The awards recognised individuals whose technical knowledge, leadership and early initiatives helped establish and expand Internet connectivity across the Asia-Pacific region.
Suchit Nanda was honoured for introducing the Live Wire! Bulletin Board System, contributing to the launch of India’s first publicly available Internet service through VSNL in 1995, co-founding LWNET and developing the JadooNet Internet set-top box. Neeraj Sonker was recognised for his engineering contributions at VSNL, particularly the development of India’s early Internet gateways and commercial Internet infrastructure.
The other recipients were Dilip Agrawal of Nepal, Sumon Ahmed Sabir of Bangladesh and Jichen Thinley of Bhutan. The awards were supported by the APNIC Foundation and are intended to preserve the history of Internet development in the Asia-Pacific region.
Important Points: SANOG stands for South Asian Network Operators Group. SANOG 44 was held in Kathmandu. India’s first public Internet service was launched by VSNL in 1995.
Six professors from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras were selected for the prestigious Anusandhan National Research Foundation J. C. Bose Grant. The grant supports senior scientists and engineers with a strong record of research excellence and provides funding for advanced and socially useful research.
The recipients were Professor Sujatha Srinivasan, recognised for affordable prosthetic and mobility technologies; Professor Thalappil Pradeep, known for developing affordable clean-water technologies; Professor Deepa Venkitesh, for research in optical communication; Professor Jitendra S. Sangwai, for work relating to sustainable and cleaner energy; Professor Ramakrishnan Swaminathan, for biomedical and healthcare innovations; and Professor Sundargopal Ghosh, for contributions to chemistry.
The selection highlighted IIT Madras’s research in drinking water, healthcare, assistive technology, communication systems, chemistry and sustainable energy.
Important Points: ANRF stands for Anusandhan National Research Foundation. The grant is named after Indian physicist and plant scientist Jagadish Chandra Bose.
The Uttarakhand government presented the Tilu Rauteli Awards to women who demonstrated outstanding achievement and courage in different fields. The state also honoured 35 Anganwadi workers for their contribution to childcare, nutrition, women’s welfare and community development.
The award is named after Tilu Rauteli, a celebrated teenage warrior from Uttarakhand. It is regarded as one of the state’s most important honours for women and recognises achievements in areas such as social service, education, sport, culture, agriculture and public welfare. The ceremony was organised around 8 August, the birth anniversary of Tilu Rauteli.
Important Points: The Tilu Rauteli Award is presented by the Government of Uttarakhand. It honours exceptional women, while a separate state-level recognition is given to outstanding Anganwadi workers.
Actor and theatre personality Kunal Kapoor received the Bombay Times Headliners Award for Theatre Legacy for preserving and advancing the legacy of Prithvi Theatre. He accepted the honour on behalf of the artists, workers and supporters who helped transform the theatre into an important Indian cultural institution.
Kunal Kapoor is the trustee of Prithvi Theatre and the son of its founders, Shashi Kapoor and Jennifer Kendal Kapoor. The theatre was established in Mumbai in memory of veteran actor and theatre pioneer Prithviraj Kapoor. Through regular performances, festivals and opportunities for emerging performers, it has played an important role in supporting Indian theatre.
Important Points: Prithvi Theatre is located in Mumbai. Kunal Kapoor accepted the award as recognition of the entire institution rather than as an individual achievement.
American actress Sophie Thatcher was selected to receive the Rising Star Award at the 52nd Deauville American Film Festival in France. The honour recognises emerging performers who have demonstrated significant talent and are expected to influence the future of cinema.
Thatcher gained international attention through productions including the television series Yellowjackets and films such as The Boogeyman, Heretic and Companion. Her selection recognised her performances across independent cinema, horror, thriller and television projects. The Deauville festival is an important French event devoted primarily to American cinema and regularly honours promising young actors.
Important Points: The Deauville American Film Festival is held in Deauville, France. Sophie Thatcher was chosen for the Rising Star Award at its 52nd edition.
The Government of India announced a special investiture ceremony for the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowships and Awards for 2024 and 2025. President Droupadi Murmu was scheduled to confer the honours on 115 distinguished artists at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on 13 August 2026.
The honours cover music, dance, theatre, traditional and folk arts, puppetry and other performing-art disciplines. The Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, also called Akademi Ratna, is the Akademi’s highest distinction, while the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, or Akademi Puraskar, recognises sustained individual achievement in the performing arts. Ten artists from the Northeast, representing Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Tripura, Manipur and Nagaland, were included among the honourees.
Important Points: Sangeet Natak Akademi is India’s National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama. It was established in 1953 and functions as an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Culture.
Deepak Dhar Among Four Recipients of the 2026 ICTP Dirac Medal
Indian theoretical physicist Professor Deepak Dhar was named one of the four recipients of the 2026 Dirac Medal awarded by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP). The other recipients were Bernard Derrida of France, Marc Mézard of Italy and Haim Sompolinsky, associated with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Harvard University.
The four scientists were recognised for pioneering contributions to equilibrium statistical mechanics and for extending its concepts to non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, optimisation, theoretical neuroscience and artificial intelligence. Professor Dhar was specifically recognised for explaining how simple interactions can create complex and unpredictable behaviour in large systems.
His influential research on the Abelian sandpile model helped explain self-organised criticality—the process through which a system naturally reaches a critical state where a small event can sometimes produce a large reaction. This principle has applications in the study of earthquakes, traffic congestion, financial-market fluctuations and other complex systems.
Professor Dhar is an INSA Distinguished Professor at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. He became the first Indian to receive the Boltzmann Medal in 2022 and was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2023.
Important Points: The Dirac Medal is named after Nobel Prize-winning physicist Paul A. M. Dirac. ICTP is located in Trieste, Italy. The medal is traditionally announced on 8 August, Dirac’s birth anniversary.
Karthikeyan Lanka Receives NASI Young Scientist Award
Professor Karthikeyan Lanka, Associate Professor at IIT Bombay’s Centre of Studies in Resources Engineering, was selected for the National Academy of Sciences, India Young Scientist Platinum Jubilee Award 2026 in the Earth Sciences category.
His research focuses on agricultural droughts, soil-moisture estimation, remote sensing, climate modelling and interactions between the land and atmosphere. He uses information obtained from satellites, microwave remote sensing and climate models to understand how changes in soil moisture and rainfall affect crops, water resources and food security.
Professor Lanka leads the Ecohydrology Group at IIT Bombay and is also associated with the institute’s Climate Studies programme. He was among the 16 scientists selected for the 2026 awards, which are scheduled to be presented during NASI’s 96th Annual Session at Banaras Hindu University in December 2026.
Important Points: NASI stands for National Academy of Sciences, India. It was established in 1930 and is headquartered in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
Ankit Agarwal Selected for NASI Young Scientist Award
Professor Ankit Agarwal of the Department of Hydrology at IIT Roorkee was also selected for the NASI Young Scientist Award 2026. He was honoured for his research contributions and leadership in hydrology, hydroclimatology, extreme weather events, monsoon systems, water resources and climate change.
His scientific work examines the behaviour of floods, droughts and other hydrological extremes. It also explores the use of data analysis, complex-network techniques and machine learning to understand climate and water systems. His research has relevance for water-resource planning, disaster preparedness and climate-resilient development.
The recognition placed Professors Karthikeyan Lanka and Ankit Agarwal among India’s leading young researchers working on climate, drought and water-related challenges.
Important Points: Professor Ankit Agarwal is associated with IIT Roorkee’s Department of Hydrology. His principal areas of work include hydroclimatology, extreme events, monsoon behaviour and climate change.
People Matters Infini-T Awards 2026 Presented in New Delhi
The second edition of the People Matters Infini-T Awards India 2026 was held at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in New Delhi on 7 August. The awards formed part of TechHR India 2026 and recognised excellence across talent management, human-resource technology and organisational transformation.
P. Dwarakanath and Dr Alka Mittal received Lifetime Achievement honours. In the Employer Brand of the Year category, Sony Pictures Networks India and UBS received Gold awards, while Myntra Designs received the Silver award.
Several public- and private-sector organisations were recognised in different categories. NTPC Limited received two awards for leadership and learning initiatives. NLC India Limited received a Silver Award, while the National Stock Exchange of India was recognised for initiatives relating to employee rewards and work-life balance.
The entries were assessed for innovation, measurable impact, scalability, sustainability, employee experience and their ability to produce lasting organisational change.
Important Points: The awards were organised around the three areas of Talent, Technology and Transformation. The 2026 ceremony was held at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi.
Tilak Varma Honoured with Urja Award 2026
Indian cricketer Tilak Varma received the Urja Award 2026 at a ceremony held at JW Marriott in Pune. The award recognised his achievements and growing contribution to Indian cricket.
He received the honour from Amruta Fadnavis in the presence of actor Chunky Panday and other guests. The event was associated with the Gravittus Foundation and its founder, Usha Kakade, which uses the Urja Awards to recognise people demonstrating achievement, energy, determination and positive social influence.
Tilak Varma is a left-handed middle-order batter who represents Hyderabad in domestic cricket and Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. He has also represented India in international limited-overs cricket.
Important Points: Tilak Varma received the award in Pune. The honour was presented in recognition of his cricketing achievements.
Nominations Opened for National Gopal Ratna Awards 2026
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying opened nominations for the National Gopal Ratna Awards 2026 on 10 August. Applications can be submitted through the National Awards Portal until 10 September 2026, and the awards will be presented on National Milk Day, 26 November 2026.
The National Gopal Ratna Awards are among India’s highest national honours in the livestock and dairy sector. They recognise dairy farmers maintaining indigenous cattle and buffalo breeds, dairy cooperative societies or milk-producer organisations, and artificial-insemination technicians.
The award has three categories: Best Dairy Farmer Rearing Indigenous Cattle or Buffalo Breeds; Best Dairy Cooperative Society, Milk Producer Company, Dairy Farmer Producer Organisation or Milk Producers’ Cooperative; and Best Artificial Insemination Technician.
For the eligible categories carrying cash prizes, the first rank receives ₹5 lakh, the second rank ₹3 lakh and the third rank ₹2 lakh. The Best Artificial Insemination Technician category carries a certificate of merit and a memento but no cash prize.
Important Points: The awards are administered by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. They are presented annually on National Milk Day, which marks the birth anniversary of Dr Verghese Kurien.
